To grow cumin, start indoors four weeks before the last spring frost and plant seeds 1/4 inch deep. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Once the minimum temperatures outside reach at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit, transplant the cumin outdoors.1 Plant cumin in well-drained soil in full sun, and keep the plant in a mild climate with warm temperatures of at least 82°F for three to four months after it flowers. The plant is sensitive to wet or humid areas and doesn't tolerate windy conditions.2 Cumin is an annual member of the carrot family and produces umbelliferous flowers that are highly attractive to beneficial garden insect predators.3 Flowering begins mid-summer on umbels of 5-7 rays.
